Relement BV was founded and established in Bergen op Zoom in 2020. Relement is the first company of its kind in that it focuses on the commercial production and marketing of bio-aromatics that are developed within the Biorizon Shared Research Centre. Relement is a spin-off of TNO, which is the developer of the specific bio-aromatics technology that is used within Horizon 2 of Biorizon (which uses furfural and 2-methylfuran as biobased resources). Relement aims to commercialize this technology, for which it also has an exclusive license agreement. The customers that Relement aims to provide with bio-aromatics are companies that request better performance in products and require a more sustainable alternative for single use products such as resins and coatings. 

Coating industries are searching constantly for components to make better products as well as creating a more sustainable future, there is an increased demand for biobased alternatives to the fossil-based resources that are currently in use. This is especially the case in many industries where recycling is not always as straight-forward, such as the production of “single use” products like coatings and resins. Highly functionalized bio-aromatics are of high economical value and show an increased performance compared to petro-aromatics. In order to provide the bio-aromatics on an industrial scale, production of bio-MPA needs to be scaled up. In Bright Coatings, the gathered knowledge and expertise by Relement and TNO will be put to use in the scaling-up of production to an demonstration scale. This project is highly important to Relement as increased production of the bio-MPA will result in a growing market share and improved market position. 

Relement has overall knowledge and expertise when it comes to the market for bio-aromatics and biobased resources such as furfural and 2-methylfuran. Relement aims to replace current fossil aromatics with special bio-aromatics. These special bio-aromatics are not only much more durable, but above all of better quality: for example, paint becomes more scratch resistance and insulating foam becomes stronger. Relement is a company for the development, production and marketing of bio-aromatics.
